Build Real-World Websites with WordPress

This online workshop offers high school students a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience by designing professional websites for community members using WordPress. Guided by an instructor, students will learn the basics of WordPress development and receive support to overcome any technical challenges along the way.

Through this hands-on experience, students will build valuable skills and enhance their resumes while making a meaningful impact in the community.  While students are learning the technology, they will practice by creating real websites for community members.  Not only the students get to practice their newly learnt skills with real requirements, they will also be able to gain experiences that they can use for their resumes and also help a community member at the same time.

Students will explore WordPress editors, themes, and plugins, gaining essential skills to create professional-looking websites. Each participant will receive their own WordPress server for hands-on practice.  WordPress is a powerful and widely-used platform that powers over 40% of all websites on the internet.

Due to limited server availability, spaces are limited, so we encourage interested students to secure their spot promptly.

FAQ for Students and Parents

Is there any prerequisite for this workshop?

Is there any prerequisite for this workshop?
You need to have access to a computer and internet. Tablets may not be sufficient to attend the course. We will be hosting the class over zoom. Working microphones will be beneficial such that students can communicate and ask questions online. Students are not required to turn on their video camera. No special equipment is needed. Students will work on cloud-based tools provided during the workshop.

Is technical knowledge or experience required for students to participate?

No, students do not need any prior experience or technical knowledge to join the workshop. The workshop accommodates students of all levels, whether they are unfamiliar with the technologies or already have some familiarity. Its design emphasizes experiential learning, allowing students to engage in hands-on project work with initial guidance by expert instructors and debugging assistance provided as needed.

How does the workshop run?
The workshop follows a structured, step-by-step process. Each session begins with a short instructional video, followed by a live demo from our expert instructor. Students then apply what they’ve learned by replicating the process on their own servers, with personalized guidance from the instructor. Once students have mastered the basics, they’ll be introduced to real-life projects submitted by local businesses or community groups. These projects serve as a foundation for hands-on practice and problem-solving, helping students apply their skills in meaningful ways.

What’s the format of the workshop?
Our workshops are highly interactive, combining hands-on learning with real-world applications. Sessions include demonstrations, group discussions, and individual exercises. From day one, students work on real-life projects sourced from small businesses or community organizations, tailoring solutions to their needs. Each student has their own server to ensure independent practice. Along the way, our instructors and teaching assistants provide support to troubleshoot technical challenges. The workshop concludes with each student presenting and demonstrating their work. Additionally, students participate in a collaboration session, where they learn how to communicate with business owners, gather project requirements, and deliver finalized work—essential skills for real-world project management. The students will also do a demonstration of the websites they created on the last day of the workshop.

What happens to the websites created during the workshop?
The completed websites are presented to the project owner, typically a community member, who selects the one that best fits their needs. Once a selection is made, 10X Hub collaborates with the community member to deploy the chosen website, making it fully functional and live.

Would students be required to continue to support the community members or project owners?
No. Students are not expected to support the community members after the final project is completed. Furthermore, all communications from the business will be directed to 10X Hub, and the community members will not have contact with students.

Would the project owner have direct contact by phone or email students?
No, all communications and meetings will be brokered by the 10X Hub coordinator. The community members or project owners will not have direct contact with students. We also instruct the students not to reach out to project owners directly.

Are there further volunteer opportunities with 10X Hub?
Absolutely! As students gain experience with the program, they can take on various volunteer roles, such as:

  • 10X Hub Coordinator: Managing communications and organizing meetings between community members and students.
  • Support Analyst: Assisting the community members and project owners after their projects are completed.
  • Teaching Assistant: Supporting instructors during workshops.
  • Advocate: Helping spread the word about 10X Hub.  No prior technical experience required.
  • Event Volunteer: Representing 10X Hub at booths and events.  No prior technical experience required.

Additionally, exceptional students may be hired as paid instructors once they enter university.

Who is eligible to participate in this program?
We extend our invitation to non-profit organizations, local community clubs/groups, schools, local for-profit businesses and other members in the community. However, if your intention is solely to replace outsourced technical work, this program may not be suitable for your needs. Our primary goal is to educate students, not to offer inexpensive labor. We prioritize projects that contribute positively to society, support local communities, minority groups, seniors and assist those who are facing technological challenges that might not have the funding to hire professionals yet. Once you have signed up by completing this form https://www.10xhub.org/contact. Our team will reach out to evaluate if your project is suitable for our workshops.

How to submit a project?

To join our program, complete the form https://www.10xhub.org/contact  and let us know what technical challenges are you looking to solve. We’ll reach out to discuss further.

What is the intake process for project selection?

After submitting a request via our website, our staff will review your organization’s information and/or speak with you to evaluate if your organization is suitable for our workshop. If it’s suitable, you will be sent a contract for review and signing. Once signed, depending on the workshop technology, you will receive a questionnaire to supply the information our students need for the workshop. The students will based on the information supplied in the questionnaire to perform the tasks. There will be no contact with the students during the workshop. Therefore, it’s crucial that you answer the questionnaire thoughtfully and with good and meaningful information. Students will not know enough about your organization to dream up information. Though we have been getting really good results by the students, results could vary.

What do I do if my project is selected?

During our student workshop, the students will learn and work on a demo for your website. There might be a few students working on different variations. You will select from a few pre-done websites created by high school students. You will then provide any replacement text and images, which the students will incorporate into the selected website. 10X Hub will set up a real server for you to host the website.

Is there any cost involved?

Currently, there is no cost for community member to participate. However, you will be responsible for the cost of your domain, hosting cost or any related website costs.

How do I manage the website created by students after the session?

The students will teach you some of the basic skills on updating your website in the skill transfer session. The students will also create small snippet videos to show you the specific tasks that were shown in the skill transfer session so that you can review them continuously.

Can I contact the students after the session if I have a problem?

No. The community member doesn’t have direct contact with any students. All communications are routed through a 10X Hub coordinator. If you need support after the session, please email [email protected]. We have paid support engagement where you can hire students to help you with any future problems.

Do I need to have technical knowledge or experience to participate?

No, technical knowledge or experience is not required from you.  Our students will provide a one-hour skill transfer session to teach you basic website management tasks. Additionally, you can access free resources for further assistance. If you later decide to hire a professional team to enhance your website, you can do so easily. 10X Hub intentionally selects widely-used technologies, making it simple to hire professional talent for additional support. Optionally, you can also hire 10X Hub students to help you with future support.

How long is the engagement?

Engagements are different depending on the workshops. Generally, engagements for the workshop are a few sessions that are 2 to 3 hours in duration for each session. The total duration of the engagement is as long as the workshop session which can be a few days to 6 weeks or more depending on the specific technologies.  For the Website workshop, the engagement will be limited to 1 hour of additional work by the students after the first websites are created during the workshop.

What outcome should I expect?

You can expect to receive a fully functional website comprising no more than three pages, crafted by high school students to suit their individual requirements and preferences. It’s important to bear in mind that these projects are undertaken by high school students, and thus may not match the caliber of work produced by professional teams. Nonetheless, we believe the students have performed admirably. You can view examples of websites created by our students here.  Typically, you can be expected to have a few website designs created by different students for your selection as your final website. After you have made your website design selection, 10X Hub will arrange a student volunteer to work with you for a maximum of 1 hour on zoom. The student volunteer will make changes to make minor adjustments on the website in the first hour. These changes will be done live in a zoom meeting such that you can also see how it’s done. The student volunteer will teach you how to update the website yourselves in the second hour. You will learn how to login to the website as an admin, update an image, update text, publish the website, etc. Use this hour wisely and attentively so that you can learn to be self sufficient. After the student demo, the 10X Hub team will reach out with instructions for you to set up your own hosting service. You have to follow the instructions on paying and initiating the hosting service. Afterwards, the 10X Hub team will help you migrate the website from the student’s server to your real server. Your website will be all set up and running after this and the engagement from the 10X Hub team will be considered complete.

Does 10X Hub only support website creation?

If you encounter any other technology-related hurdles, feel free to reach out to us or sign up to inform us of your needs. We’ll assess whether the challenge aligns with opportunities for valuable skill development among our students.

What if I want to change a lot of things on the website?

The students are limited to only 1 hour of additional changes. If you wish to change a lot of things, you can feel free to hire an external professional team or hire the 10X Hub team for further engagement.

Do I need to use a specific hosting server?

Yes, our teams are trained on the WordPress server hosted on inmotionhosting.com (open to new page).  This is 10X Hub affiliation link.  We get 1 free month of hosting if you join via our link.  We appreciate any support.

What is the reason for using WordPress and Inmotionhosting?

These are the platforms that our students and teams are trained on. To streamline the process, it’s advantageous to utilize a consistent set of technologies that align with the students’ expertise.
